The Providence Journal suggests that Mike Timlin is "likely" to fill the Red Sox's closer opening. It seems like mostly speculation, but Timlin has always seemed like the logical choice if no one else emerged. Don't expect an official announcement anytime soon, but it's worth nothing that several sources now consider him the frontrunner. While Timlin looked close to done at the end of last year, it's possible the five months off will allow him to resemble a quality reliever at the beginning of this season. Source: Providence Journal

Thats great and all, but how about the fact that he has yet to throw a pitch yet because of a pulled back. Honestly, if Piniero plays like he did the last time out (and not the first) then I think it will be him. However I've also heard some talk that Hansen looked good in his first side action and could be the closer before too long.

I agree with einshine here, it is a little premature to consider timlin the frontrunner while he's yet to throw a pitch. Piniero really was awful in that first start, but hey, I'm willing to put that behind me. As for Hansen, I'd like to see him spend a little more time seasoning in the minors. And after the way Julian Tavarez pitched at the end of last season, I wouldn't count him out as a candidate.

Eh, Tavarez still scares me no matter what. I think he's better suited for a starting position then in the bullpen, but we have no spots there. I think Hansen will start in the minors this season but if whoever the closer is starts to stumble I could see him being pulled right back up. I really see Delcarmen winning that final bullpen spot.
